Eyes down, ready to shout for bingo

LEGS eleven, two fat ladies, two little ducks and bingo will be common words heard this weekend.

Patience, concentration and a whole heap of luck are needed by the 1000-plus players competing in the inaugural Tasmanian Bingo Championships at Wrest Point.

One lucky player at the weekend will be crowned Tasmanian bingo champion.

Six bus loads of eager bingo players are making the trip from the North and North-West and cash prizes of up to $3000 are up for grabs.

Bingo games vary but one of the most common is for a player to mark off 15 numbers which are called out and displayed on a television screen.

Once they have all the numbers they yell out "bingo!".

Shane Jarman from Bingo Sales Group Australia said bingo was becoming increasingly popular.

"When gaming machines were introduced we had a drop off but in the last couple of years it has become popular again," he said.

Bingo sessions are held throughout the state each week with sessions at Glenorchy and Bellerive attracting about 200 people each week.

About 4000 people across the state play bingo each week.

About 200 participants were getting in some training last night at the Glenorchy Football Club clubrooms.

Thelma Cooper, of Rosetta, has been playing for about 30 years.

She plays twice a week and enjoys the social interaction.

"I just go along and have a go," he said.

"We just go to bingo to have a bit of fun and enjoy ourselves."

Her friend Pam Hayes is also a regular player.

"It is good to get out of the house. I'm a carer for my husband so it is nice to come here for a break," she said.

Last night at Glenorchy she won $50. The most she has won is $150.

The championship games start at 4pm tomorrow.
